The Just Transition Fund is proud to announce the launch of our Local Economy Lab, a new initiative designed to help eligible coal communities scale high-impact, community-led economic development projects.
As the landscape of federal funding opportunities shift, we know that communities need new pathways to sustain and grow the progress they’ve made. The Local Economy Lab aims to meet that need by supporting projects that are rooted in local leadership and designed for long-term economic resilience.
Over the next year, we will partner with 5–10 organizations leading transformative economic or workforce development projects in coal-impacted communities.
In addition to funding this opportunity includes the following:
Contact Marissa Berkley with questions, mberkley@justtransitionfund.org.
Complete Stage 1 application by 05/09/2025.

Qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, local governments, and Tribal governments are eligible to apply. We support organizations that are deeply-rooted in coal-affected areas and have a demonstrated ability to partner with and engage a wide range of transition stakeholders.
Step 1 online application due by Friday, May 9, 2025. JTF will invite a select number of full applications, which will then be due within approximately 2-3 weeks, anticipated in June. The selected cohort will be announced in late summer/early fall.
